The best thing you can do for a friend is to be a friend. Sometimes they might need company, sometimes a ride to do some errands. There are many folks that are essentially “shut-ins” and nearly never get out and when they do, they don’t have access to a car.

For some, they just need a hand to get some tools or supplies to get started on an important project. For example, helping someone get storage bins to begin the job of organizing clutter-gone-wild.

Interconnect! — Wheel Tales of Willow City

InterConnect 00 InterConnect 01 InterConnect 02 InterConnect 03 InterConnect 04 InterConnect 05 InterConnect 06 InterConnect 07 InterConnect 08 InterConnect 09Software companies put out patches and updates and upgrades so very often and sometimes it seems a bit prematurely. Some of these seem to break the whole computer system. What are you supposed to do when the problems caused by that patch/update/upgrade makes it so you can’t connect to the Internet or even so the computer won’t start. Many folks are lucky to have a second computer at hand, or a computer tech that they can call on. Others are just out of luck unless they can take their computer to a computer repair shop… and pay for the repairs.

Sometimes it is hard to get through to a help desk by phone and even when you do, make it understood that you can’t download a patch or use other helpful tools that they are used to advising a customer to use. I imagine somewhere in the legal mumbo-jumbo there is a clause saying that they are not responsible!

It can be very important to have your files backed up at all times and to have a way to start up your computer even when you can’t get it to start from your hard drive. IE a Start-up CD or DVD; or a flash-drive/thumb drive/etc with your operating system (OS like OSX, Windows, Linux) on it.

Sometimes I don’t know how the average person can keep a computer running.

Time’s Up! — Wheel Tales of Willow City

Their lives not restricted by their disability, but by the lack of funds that might provide the help they need to live like a normal human being, and not a prisoner or caged animal.

People that are restricted to 12 hours out of bed have to work very hard to get a full life squeezed into the 12 hours left..

Charge! — Wheel Tales of Willow City

Charge 00 Charge 01 Charge 02 Charge 03 Charge 04 Charge 05 Charge 06 Charge 07 Charge 08 Charge 09 Charge 10 Charge 11 Charge 12 Charge 13Most people are inconvenienced by a power outage. Even in a major city in an emergency like the aftermath of a severe storm; earthquake; or tsunami, power can be out for days. Other people are dependant on that same power for more than light or heat. They rely on electrical devices to do the small things like get in and out of bed — to get in and out of the washroom — or to get in and out of a wheelchair or even bed. More than food can be spoiled by lack of refrigeration. Insulin is something that needs to be kept refrigerated.

It would be nice if everyone who had such a need had a back-up power source that would extend the use of their equipment for a day and even something like a generator that could provide power for longer.

We just had a severe storm and some were without power for two or three days. It started with 750,000 homes and businesses without power for 10+ hours and a large chunk of that population as much as 3 days. There sure was a lot of spoiled food.

I don’t know how many considered the elderly, disabled, and the folks living alone under such circumstance.

Remember those folks during times of emergency.

Warehoused — Wheel Tales of Willow City

Warhoused 00 Warhoused 01 Warhoused 02 Warhoused 03 Warhoused 04 Warhoused 05 Warhoused 06 Warhoused 07 Warhoused 08 Warhoused 09When it is deemed that a person in hospital can no longer live safely in their home, the social service administration that looks after a person’s health and well-being, can refuse to release them until a suitable location is found?

This can be the case when a person falls and breaks a hip, or shows that they can no longer do transfers from a wheelchair without aid. This can happen even if the person isn’t on any disability benefit or pension, but is financially independent.

Instead of going back to the home they left, they end up being “warehoused” in a hospital until a space in a suitable facility opens up. It might be necessary for a person to have more assistance requiring a “semi-assisted living” facility or an “assisted living” one. In the meantime they languish in the stark environment of a hospital taking up a valuable bed. They are “warehoused”.

The only solution I can think of are making more units available. Growth is needed in facilities with our aging populations.
