A Day Wasted – reprise — Wheel Tales of Willow City

A Day Wasted 00A Day Wasted 01A Day Wasted 02A Day Wasted 03A Day Wasted 04A Day Wasted 05A Day Wasted 06A Day Wasted 07A Day Wasted 08Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope that you have a chance to let those you love, especially romantically, that you love them! No need for jewellery, flowers, cards, or chocolates. (They they might be nice.) But a bit of your time to let them know how important they are to you and how they play an important part in your life. Let them know that time with time is never wasted.

I hope you enjoy these and I would really appreciate your spreading the word. My stories are spread by word-of-mouth so this is the way that others might also see them.

Here in the temperate areas of  the Northern Hemisphere Spring is coming. In some places they are still digging out of the Winter’s snows, but in others, trees and other plants are beginning to green and bloom. It can be a chance to catch some time with a friend or lover in the outdoors.

If Winter is still wrapped firmly around where you live, don’t despair, Spring is still coming. In the Southern Hemisphere, enjoy the cozy cooler times with your loved ones.

Time spent with someone you care for — lover, friend, or family member — is never wasted!

Thank you!

Coffee — Wheel Tales of Willow City

Be creative and see what you can raise for your favourite organization. Businesses with a break room or lunch room might encourage employees to have coffee in the break room or bring a lunch from home instead of going out. If they donate what they would have paid, the money will add up, even if they only do it once or twice a week.

Be creative!

Have you ever noticed that whenever you ask kids… or some adults what they’ve been doing, the answer is universally, “Nothin'”.

This strip* was published before as “Wheel Tales of We’ll Make Cents” but we thought it would be better to publish more independently — hence the change in venue and name to “Wheel Tales of Willow City”.

We'll Make Cents“We’ll Make Cents” was an organization that helped support a number of not-for-profit causes which might get overlooked.

Donations are actually hard to come by for Charities and other not-for-profit organizations. Consider what you might be able to donate. It might be a good time to clean that closet, attic, cellar, shed, or garage! You might have someone else’s next treasured possession.

Barriers to accessibility might not be obvious. A crowd of people waiting for a bus can effectively block a sidewalk for both able-bodied and those in wheelchairs or on mobility scooters. (shopping carts, baby strollers, baby carriages…) It might seem that you only have to ask and people would move, but it is not easy for many people to approach and speak to a stranger. Some people would simply wait until there is room to get through.

Keep an eye out for barriers to both the able and disabled members of society.

It is a good sign that many institutions are making changes to allow for easy access for wheelchairs that don’t require entering through loading docks and store rooms. Entering through a back entrance can add a bit to much of a sense of adventure to an outing.

Barriers to accessibility for those depending on using a wheelchair might not be obvious to the able-bodied observer. A patch of deep gravel left as a temporary measure by maintenance workers might be easily walked over by anyone walking, but that same patch of gravel would bog down a wheelchair.

The same patch can be an issue for baby strollers and carriages; elderly and their walkers or canes; as well as mobility scooters and wheelchairs. Luckily most times such patches are temporary, but there are similar sorts of barriers that pop up from time to time and some aren’t cleared up quickly.

Keep an eye out for barriers to both the able and disabled members of society.

It is amazing how many folks can make simple mistakes, like talking louder to someone that is visually impaired or shouting English to someone who doesn’t know English. As if one impairment implies another or shouting makes up for language differences.

I hope you enjoy this reprise of an earlier “Wheel Tales of Willow City” story. I thought I’d post it this Easter Sunday, in part to take a break for Easter Week. I know not all of my readers are Christian, but many other Faiths have their own celebrations at this time of the year. I wish you all a Blessed Sunday. I wish you a Blessed Sunday even if you don’t follow any structured spiritual path.

The Further Adventures of Alfred Duncan — Wheel Tales of Willow City

There is considerable planning involved in making public and private structures accessible. Sometimes it can’t be done, but most places are successful. A couple of friends of mine told me about something they came across. After ascending the wheelchair ramps to the entrance of a building, they were stymied to find two or three steps at the front entrance. Those steps created a barrier to anyone in a wheelchair that wasn’t a wheelchair athlete.

There seems always to be more work needed to make buildings wheelchair accessible. Perhaps it is the fact that many places are well done that make the bad ones stand out more… but I hear horror stories still.

Of course there are many who make huge efforts to help!
