Coming Up in the Tapestry – 79

Status

Saturday (September 24, 2016) I have a new “Wheel Tales” cartoon, “Costs”. “Costs” deals with some costs that most families can cope with that others have problems with.

cost-feature“Wheel Tales of Willow City” is the more serious comic that we do on Gnome Tapestry.. It deals with issues and obstacles faced by folks living with disabilities and the general public as well.

I hope you like the cartoons. I’d love to hear from you and find out what you think of them. Drop a note to me via my Facebook page “The Gnome’s Garden”.

Shamed! — Wheel Tales of Willow City

Not all confine a person to a chair 100% of the time. Many people are lucky enough to be able to stand, with or without support for short periods of time. Some can even walk short distances, but not for more than a few dozen steps. Sometimes it is a heart issue, other times other issues.

So please don’t judge. Please don’t assume. People also aren’t obligated to tell you extremely personal information like what health problems they might have.

I hope you remember that when you next see someone with a wheel chair stand for a bit or even walk a few steps. While there may be some people that are faking injuries to defraud the insurance company, that is only a very small percentage of the population.

I hope you enjoy these and I would really appreciate your spreading the word. My stories are spread by word-of-mouth so this is the way that others might also see them.

Thank you!

Your Life Matters!

You are worthwhile, you are worthy, your life matters!

Your Life Matters 1xIn different places, there are different challenges. Some face unprovoked violence, others exclusion, others torture, poverty and more. There is discriminatory violence against people of a race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, and this list isn’t complete. It is good to stand up, not only for yourself and others who you identify with, but stand up for those others who are being the target of hatred and fear. Stand up with others who are the targets of this violence and discrimination.

No matter what, your life matters!

Even if for some reason you can’t speak out, your life matters!

Spun Out! – 3 — Wheel Tales of Willow City

They travel so much faster than pedestrian traffic and seem to take up more room than a person walking or even running. I don’t know how often I’ve had to dodge cyclists but it has been far too often. I can only imagine what it is like if you are in a wheelchair or on a mobility scooter… or if you have young children with you or some problem with mobility.

Recently we even had an elderly person hit and knocked over by someone in a mobility scooter going very fast down the sidewalk. The person struck ended up with a fractured skull and broken hip.

It’s actually illegal for most people to be riding on a sidewalk. It’s a crime that they do so and morally even more so, I think, when there is a dedicated “bike lane” on that road.

IF you must ride a bike, or skateboard on a sidewalk, remember that you are a guest there and it really isn’t someplace that you have any sort of right-of-way. Really, in my opinion that might even go for running and mobility scooters that can move at running speeds and beyond. Look Out for people on the sidewalk. It is you who should yield and give way, not them. That is even if you tinkle your bell or toot your horn.

PS I realized after doing the frames for the cartoon that I neglected to put helmets on the cyclists. If I re-did the art I’d have bicycle helmets on the riders. Please remember to wear your bike helmet. Even if not for your safety, wear it as a good example for children and young people. I know that if you are of my age, you likely rode for decades without even knowing there were helmets or that anyone would wear one unless they were racing in some event. But if kids see adults not wearing helmets, they lose respect for the laws governing such things.

A well publicised increase in the monthly disability  or monthly benefit, paid to people with disabilities might outshine an increase in fees those people have to pay for another service. For instance a $77 increase might nearly disappear when a new $52 monthly fee for transit is applied.

It might be nice to get that $25 a month extra, but when that has been the only increase over 10 years, it is a pittance.

I hope that you have a chance to let those you love, especially romantically, that you love them! No need for jewellery, flowers, cards, or chocolates. (They they might be nice.) But a bit of your time to let them know how important they are to you and how they play an important part in your life. Let them know that time with time is never wasted.

Here in the temperate areas of  the Northern Hemisphere Spring is coming. In some places they are still digging out of the Winter’s snows, but in others, trees and other plants are beginning to green and bloom. It can be a chance to catch some time with a friend or lover in the outdoors.

If Winter is still wrapped firmly around where you live, don’t despair, Spring is still coming. In the Southern Hemisphere, enjoy the cozy cooler times with your loved ones.

Time spent with someone you care for — lover, friend, or family member — is never wasted!

Thank you!

Have you ever realized that you haven’t heard from a friend or relative in a long time? Don’t just sit there and wait for a call. You can call them. Even if it is long distance, you can give a quick call to say “Hi!”. But usually either party can reach out with a call!

The best thing you can do for a friend is to be a friend. Sometimes they might need company, sometimes a ride to do some errands. There are many folks that are essentially “shut-ins” and nearly never get out and when they do, they don’t have access to a car.

For some, they just need a hand to get some tools or supplies to get started on an important project. For example, helping someone get storage bins to begin the job of organizing clutter-gone-wild.
