Upsetting — Wheel Tales of Willow City

upsetting-00 upsetting-01 upsetting-02 upsetting-03 upsetting-04 upsetting-05 upsetting-06 upsetting-07 upsetting-08 upsetting-09 upsetting-10I keep hearing about the polls for elections and what the percentages are. I see the numbers and having had a bit of formal education in statistics and probability understand what they are talking about. I’ll watch them predict one outcome or the other when there are only one or two percent difference between the two choices and I’ll think, “this could go either way.” Then after the votes are tallied I’ll hear them talking about the upset. This is even while the results are saying the two people running are 5 percent apart… or less.

It makes me wonder if the definition of “an upset” has changed.

(Note, I understand that the final results might be very different, but before they are in, while the results were still within 5%, they call it an upset. Of course the outcome of a political election can be very different from the popular vote.)

I hope you enjoy these and I would really appreciate your spreading the word. My stories are spread by word-of-mouth so this is the way that others might also see them.

Thank you!

Happy Thanksgiving! 2016

thanks-giving-tableI want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! I hope that you can spend the day with those you love and consider all that you have to be thankful for. Please be safe on the roads if you are travelling.

It’s Thanksgiving Day in Canada, Monday October 10th, 2016. We hold it the second Monday in October. Our harvest is on average a bit earlier than in the US so our end of harvest holiday is earlier as well.

Thanks for dropping by!

Costs — Wheel Tales of Willow City

cost-00 cost-01 cost-02 cost-03 cost-04 cost-05 cost-06 cost-07 cost-08cost-09 cost-10 cost-11cost-12 cost-13 cost-featureThe medical coverage available to disabled people who are receiving a disability benefit or pension is pretty incredible. But, there are some holes in this sort of insurance coverage. When you are on a low fixed income, buying things like normal pain killers and multi-vitamins can really take a bite out of a modest grocery budget. Prepping for certain test procedures can require things like specialized laxatives that are necessary, but not covered. People with allergies can be left with large chunks bitten out of their budget.

It might not be as painful if the benefits brought people above the poverty line. Some places are good and they are at the poverty line. But others are needlessly behind. Then it’s a matter of buying groceries or going to the food-bank.

I think it is such small nit-picky things that lead people on disability to protest and ask for the benefit rates to be increased. At the same time they look ungrateful to the population.

Other than raising the rates in these places I don’t know of any solution other than perhaps providing some coverage for these things if they might be prescribed by a physician.

I hope you enjoy these and I would really appreciate your spreading the word. My stories are spread by word-of-mouth so this is the way that others might also see them.

Saturday (September 24, 2016) I have a new “Wheel Tales” cartoon, “Costs”. “Costs” deals with some costs that most families can cope with that others have problems with.

cost-feature“Wheel Tales of Willow City” is the more serious comic that we do on Gnome Tapestry.. It deals with issues and obstacles faced by folks living with disabilities and the general public as well.

I hope you like the cartoons. I’d love to hear from you and find out what you think of them. Drop a note to me via my Facebook page “The Gnome’s Garden”.

Not all confine a person to a chair 100% of the time. Many people are lucky enough to be able to stand, with or without support for short periods of time. Some can even walk short distances, but not for more than a few dozen steps. Sometimes it is a heart issue, other times other issues.

So please don’t judge. Please don’t assume. People also aren’t obligated to tell you extremely personal information like what health problems they might have.

I hope you remember that when you next see someone with a wheel chair stand for a bit or even walk a few steps. While there may be some people that are faking injuries to defraud the insurance company, that is only a very small percentage of the population.

Your Life Matters!

You are worthwhile, you are worthy, your life matters!

Your Life Matters 1xIn different places, there are different challenges. Some face unprovoked violence, others exclusion, others torture, poverty and more. There is discriminatory violence against people of a race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, and this list isn’t complete. It is good to stand up, not only for yourself and others who you identify with, but stand up for those others who are being the target of hatred and fear. Stand up with others who are the targets of this violence and discrimination.

No matter what, your life matters!

Even if for some reason you can’t speak out, your life matters!

Spun Out! – 3 — Wheel Tales of Willow City

They travel so much faster than pedestrian traffic and seem to take up more room than a person walking or even running. I don’t know how often I’ve had to dodge cyclists but it has been far too often. I can only imagine what it is like if you are in a wheelchair or on a mobility scooter… or if you have young children with you or some problem with mobility.

Recently we even had an elderly person hit and knocked over by someone in a mobility scooter going very fast down the sidewalk. The person struck ended up with a fractured skull and broken hip.

It’s actually illegal for most people to be riding on a sidewalk. It’s a crime that they do so and morally even more so, I think, when there is a dedicated “bike lane” on that road.

IF you must ride a bike, or skateboard on a sidewalk, remember that you are a guest there and it really isn’t someplace that you have any sort of right-of-way. Really, in my opinion that might even go for running and mobility scooters that can move at running speeds and beyond. Look Out for people on the sidewalk. It is you who should yield and give way, not them. That is even if you tinkle your bell or toot your horn.

PS I realized after doing the frames for the cartoon that I neglected to put helmets on the cyclists. If I re-did the art I’d have bicycle helmets on the riders. Please remember to wear your bike helmet. Even if not for your safety, wear it as a good example for children and young people. I know that if you are of my age, you likely rode for decades without even knowing there were helmets or that anyone would wear one unless they were racing in some event. But if kids see adults not wearing helmets, they lose respect for the laws governing such things.

I hope you enjoy these and I would really appreciate your spreading the word. My stories are spread by word-of-mouth so this is the way that others might also see them.
